openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference 2020 Diamond Sponsors

Collabora, SUSE and The Document Foundation are Diamond Sponsors for openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference 2020. The joint openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference 2020 will run from October 15 – 17, and will be fully virtual. LibreOffice and openSUSE advocates, supporters and contributors are invited to register now and take part! Although different from past conferences, the event will be rich in contents and will also provide the opportunity of open discussions in specific virtual spaces.

Collabora is one of the major contributors to the LibreOffice project: 37% of commits to the LibreOffice source code in the last two years were made by the company, which provides different products based on the LibreOffice Technology and targeted to enterprises such as a desktop and an online version with Long Term Support, plus mobile applications for Android and iOS.

Conference organizers announce schedule and platform registration

Organizers of the online openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference are pleased to announce that the schedule for the conference is published.

All times on the schedule are published in Coordinated Universal Time. The conference will take place from live Oct. 15 to Oct. 17 using the oslo.gonogo.live platform.

There are more than 100 talks scheduled, covering the openSUSE and LibreOffice projects. There are talks about open-source projects, cloud and container technologies, embedded devices, community development, translations, marketing, documentation, Future Technologies, Quality Assurance and more. 

There will be multiple sessions happening at the same time, so some talks might overlap. Attendees have an option to personalize a schedule so that they are reminded when the live talk they would like to see begins. 

Live talks scheduled for the event will be either a 15 minute short talks, a 30 minute normal talks or a 60-minute work group/panel session. 

Attendees will be able to register on https://oslo.gonogo.live before the even, up until October 14. The platform is designed as a social conferencing tool. Users can put in profile information, share their location and interact with other members of the audience. 

All attendees are encouraged to click on the upper left menu and click the Info/Tour button to get familiar with the platform. The presenter will have the possibility to control the video as well as pause, rewind, fast-forward, etc., which is built into the system; the format of the video would need to be an mp4 and shared from a URL that everyone can access; this could be share from Google Drive, Nextcloud, ownCloud or another video sharing platform.

Conference T-shirts can be purchased in the platform under the shop button starting from October 13.

Build your skills – join our online hackfest during the LibreOffice conference!

Who makes LibreOffice? How can you – as a user – get involved in the community? And what can you contribute to the project? Well, we’ll answer all of these questions, and more, in an upcoming online “hackfest” during the LibreOffice conference. This is a virtual event where the world’s foremost LibreOffice experts will be at hand, to answer your questions about contributing to the project. You can see how they work and “how the sausage is made”, as they say!

There are many ways to help out:

  • Designing the user interface
  • Improving the features and functionality with C++ programming
  • Updating the documentation
  • Translating the app and website
  • Starting cool marketing campaigns
  • Confirming bug reports from other users

And much more. By joining a well-known and well-established FOSS project like LibreOffice, you can build up your skillset for future career options. And also meet new people and have fun!

So, do you have a question about contributing? If so, please send your questions to ilmari.lauhakangas@libreoffice.org by 27 September 2020.

A panel of experts will convene to present on your questions and topics. Everyone is welcome to join and ask further questions. In the case that your spontaneous questions render the experts speechless, answers will be provided after the event. The duration of the event is one hour.

openSUSE + LibreOffice Virtual Conference Talks Accepted

Talks submitted for the openSUSE + LibreOffice Virtual Conference have been reviewed and accepted by the conference organizers.

The approved talks have been updated in the Open Source Event Manager instance on events.opensuse.org.

The organizers thank everyone who took the time and effort to submit a talk for the conference.

Speakers have until Sept. 6 to confirm their talk/s for the conference on events.opensuse.org. Speakers will need to login, click on My Proposals and will have an option to confirm the accepted proposal. There is also a withdraw proposal option.

People who have issues logging on to confirm their talk may have not realized the openSUSE went through a migration and users might need to migrate their account following the steps on https://idp-portal-info.suse.com.

The events.opensuse.org website is used to manage talk submissions, scheduling of talks and registrations, but there will be an online live conferencing platform where the conference will take place online from Oct. 15. – 17.

More information will follow in the coming weeks about the tool and how to navigate it.

Attendees will be able to customize their schedule by adding sessions they would like to participate in once the platform is ready.

The conference will have technical talks about LibreOffice, openSUSE, open source, cloud, containers and more. Extra time for Questions and Answers after each talk is possible and the talks will be recorded. The conference will schedule frequent breaks for networking and socializing.
