LibreOffice Conference 2021: How-to for participants

The online LibreOffice Conference 2021 starts tomorrow! Here’s how to take part…

Program

The schedule of the conference is available from here. Time zone is on the upper left: depending on your system settings, it usually is Europe/Berlin time (UTC+2).

There is an app available too – downloads from here:

Attending

Talks will be streamed on the website and on YouTube. Links will be made available on the first day of the conference and will be always available on the conference website. Please check the YouTube links regularly, at least once per day, as they might change.

We strongly recommend one of the two streaming above, but you can still join the Jitsi instance as a fallback with these links (to post questions/comments, please use the separate discussion channels below):

For socializing, chatting, seeing each other, and testing their video setup, all registered attendees can now use our “LibOCon Social” room (this room is neither streamed nor recorded).

Note that you are requested to register (if you are not a speaker) here in that case.

If you are not registered already, and if you register during the conference, it might take a while to get processed. And make sure that you are muted when you join and there are no videos active on your side.

Note: The current Jitsi version does NOT work with Safari on macOS at all. Firefox and Chrome work without problems. The Jitsi app for Android and iOS will likely not work with the Jitsi instance. We strongly recommend participating from a desktop device, or use one of the other mobile-compatible streaming facilities above (website, YouTube)

Asking questions

If you want to ask questions to the speakers, you can do so via Matix, IRC and Telegram. The 3 channels are bridged together, so you only need to join your preferred one:

The moderator of the talk will read your questions to the speaker and they will answer in the stream. Do not ask your questions on the Jitsi chat.

General

There are two more channels at your disposal: we will publish all announcements on the two Telegram groups: LibreOffice Virtual Conference Announcements and LibreOffice Virtual Conference. On IRC, the general channel is here, while on Matrix it is here.

LibreOffice 2021 Schedule Mobile App

The LibreOffice 2021 Schedule Mobile App is immediately available on Google Play and F-Droid. From the F-Droid page is also possible to download the APK, although by installing that way you will not receive update notifications.

The mobile app, for Android smartphones and tablets, shows the conference schedule: by swiping right and left, the user can switch between the three rooms, while a drop down menu allows to chose one of the three days. By tapping on each of the talks, it is possible to star it to create a personal conference schedule, and to set an alarm to avoid losing the important presentations. Changes to the schedule will be immediately reflected on the mobile app, although it is always possible to force a refresh, and to show the latest changes.

LibreOffice Conference 2021 will open on September 23 at noon CEST and will close on September 25 at 5:30PM CEST. The schedule is available at the following link: https://events.documentfoundation.org/libocon2021/schedule/. Please check it on a regular basis for last minute changes.

People who will attend the LibreOffice Conference via Jitsi are kindly requested to register by filling in the form on the following webpage: https://conference.libreoffice.org/2021/registration-form/. The registration will allow us to manage conference sessions in the best way, to provide a smoother experience than in 2020 (when we had a couple of unwelcome “guests” trying to spoil the event).

LibreOffice Conference 2021 will be streamed on the conference website and YouTube. To ask questions to speakers, attendees will be able to use Matrix, IRC [Libera Chat] or Telegram (channels will be bridged, so it will be possible to use only one of them).

LibreOffice Conference 2021: Announcing the logo!

In late June, we started a competition to design the logo for our upcoming LibreOffice Conference 2021. We received 22 submissions with many great ideas – thanks to everyone who took part!

The conference organisers examined every design and ranked them, and today we’re announcing the winner, which is created by Alan Ward. Here’s how it looks:

Alan also provided a simplified monochrome version which can be used on merchandise – stay tuned to this blog for more on that. And here’s what he had to say about the design:

This design is inspired by the theme of a community coming together to share common experience. The hexagonal grid motif suggests networking from a technical and a human standpoint. The viewer’s attention is drawn to the LibreOffice emblem, as a focal point in the center. Colors have been chosen from a palette derived from the official LibreOffice typography, to suit both light and dark backgrounds.

Several versions of the logo have been prepared, to suit different applications. These include both full color and monochrome versions, in both hi and low resolution. High resolution printing process can reproduce thinner lines correctly (eg printed documents, PDF files). However, the use of several colors increases production costs or may not be available, so a simple monochrome may be required as an alternative to full-color. Either color or monochrome hires versions of the logo may easily be adapted as a base for a themed wallpaper.

Low-resolution printing processes such as those used to print T-shirts or engrave metal or wood articles require the use of relatively bold lines to show up correctly on the finished product. This is why a simple design with few elements is most effective in this situation. The use of several colors also increases production costs, so a simple monochrome approach is perhaps best for these applications. The monochrome design can easily be adapted for different colors of the support material (e.g. T-shirts in white, gray, black).

Thanks again to Alan for his design – a magic box of LibreOffice goodies is on his way to him! And thanks to everyone else for their submissions (we’ll get in touch and send you some LibreOffice stickers). Even though we had to choose one design in the end, there were plenty of great and creative ideas, and we really appreciate the input.
