LibreOffice monthly recap: October 2018

Here’s our regular recap of events and updates in the last month! The Albanian LibreOffice Community made an awesome recap video of our recent conference in Tirana. As a large open source project serving millions of end users, LibreOffice has extensive infrastructure. We talked to Guilhem Moulin, who is in charge of The Document Foundation’s infrastructure and services, about new developments and how others can get involved. Meanwhile, the QA community organised the first Bug Hunting Session for LibreOffice 6.2, which is currently in development and due to be released in early February next year. Marketing Activities, January to September 2018

The new year at The Document Foundation starts with FOSDEM, where many LibreOffice contributors gather for the largest Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) meeting in Europe. In 2018 we had a booth in the main hall of building K, where most of the largest projects are based, and a devroom focused on OpenDocument Format (ODF) editing software. The marketing team at TDF was in charge of the booth and the devroom, and also of logistics for the internal meetings and the hackfest organized at ICAB just after FOSDEM. I also helped to cook some real Italian pasta for the social dinner on Saturday, where the community gathered together with some friends. Just before FOSDEM, we announced LibreOffice 6.0. We coordinated the announcement, drafting the documents for the press kit and organizing several pre briefings with journalists. As usual, thanks to the efforts of localization volunteers we were able to distribute the press release in some local languages. We then followed up with announcements of minor releases, with a reduced emphasis in comparison with the major announcement. LibreOffice monthly recap: July 2018

There’s a lot going on in the LibreOffice community, in the lead up to LibreOffice 6.1, in development, documentation, design, QA, translations and much more. Here’s a summary of news and updates in July… Preparations for LibreOffice 6.1 continued, with the final Bug Hunting Session on July 6. Users around the world helped to test new features and report bugs so that they can be fixed before the final release – thanks to everyone who took part! The Taiwanese LibreOffice community created an awesome promotional video for LibreOffice Viewer. Check it out below – and download the app from the Play Store or F-Droid. Marketing activities so far in 2017: Mike Saunders

Thanks to donations to The Document Foundation, along with valued contributions from our community, we maintain a small team working on various aspects of LibreOffice including documentation, user interface design, quality assurance, release engineering and marketing. Together with Italo Vignoli, I help with the latter, and today I’ll summarise some of the achievements so far in 2017. Videos The year started off with preparations for LibreOffice 5.3, a major release that arrived on February 1st. We’ve found that videos are a great way to demonstrate new features to end users – and news websites often embed them as well. So I created a series of New Features videos for LibreOffice 5.3 covering the suite as a whole, along with Writer, Calc and Impress. Interview with Florian Effenberger, TDF Executive Director

The typical day of an executive director My work consists of both administrative tasks – like accounting, correspondence, budget and contractual topics – as well as overseeing our team and making projects come to life. Whenever I have some spare time, I try to contribute to the German native-language community, the marketing project and our infrastructure. The e-mail flow is quite massive with a couple of hundreds e-mails per day coming in as personal messages as well as on dozens of mailing lists, so my morning usually starts with prioritizing tasks and mails to structure my day’s work. 2016 so far for LibreOffice and for TDF: your personal perspective 2016 has been an extremely exciting year for us. LibreOffice adoption is continously growing, so is the community, and we welcomed several new members to our Advisory Board. Lots of events around the world took place, and every year when we compile the annual report it becomes obvious how much enthusiasm, dedication and passion our contributors have for LibreOffice. A huge thanks to our donors

Donations to The Document Foundation have been steadily growing for the last three years, thanks to the generosity of many thousands of people around the world. In 2016, donations have been 82,036 (a 14.2% increase over 2015). In 2015, donations have been 71,839 (a 9.5% increase over 2014). In 2014, donations have been 65,579. Donations are key to our project, as they provide the economic resources to keep the organization and the infrastructure running, to fund activities such as participation of volunteers to FOSDEM and the LibreOffice Conference, and to help local activities organized locally by native language projects.
