Here’s our summary of updates, events and activities in the LibreOffice project in the last four weeks – click the links to learn more…

• Every six months – in February and August – we release a new major update to LibreOffice. And on 20 August, LibreOffice 25.8 arrived with many new features, plus compatibility improvements and performance boosts. Check out this video for an overview (also available on PeerTube):

• One week after the release, we posted some stats. And at the end of the month, the first minor bugfix update was made available: LibreOffice 25.8.1.

• Meanwhile, the LibreOffice Asia Conference 2025 will take place in Tokyo in December, and the call for proposals is now open (until 16 September).

• Throughout the month, we posted regular articles about ODF, the Open Document Format: What’s new in ODF 1.3 and 1.4; Best practices for creating and editing ODF files; and Guide to migrating from proprietary formats to ODF.

• At The Document Foundation, we have a new job opening! Join the LibreOffice Team as a Paid Developer focusing on UI with initial emphasis on macOS, preferably full-time, remote.

• LibreOffice does not include artificial intelligence (AI) out-of-the-box. But many users want AI features in the suite – so we encourage developers to make them available as optional extensions. And that’s what Igor Támara did, creating the “Stable Diffusion for LibreOffice” extension for AI-generated images powered by AI Horde (a volunteer crowd-sourced distributed cluster of image generation workers).

• And here’s another cool thing: PyPos3DLO: a Python 3D app based on LibreOffice to create mechanical characters, edit and optimize Poser files, and manipulate WaveFront files.

• Some sad news: long-time LibreOffice contributor Juan Carlos Sanz passed away. We are very thankful to his work in the project over the years.

• Finally, we posted a reminder that the LibreOffice Conference 2025 is coming up in Budapest, from 4 – 6 September. See you there! 😊

• We started July with some very positive news: a Danish Ministry is switching from Microsoft Office/365 to LibreOffice. The goal is to “create more competition and innovation – and reduce Denmark’s dependence on the few”.

• Then we posted the LibreOffice Podcast, Episode #4 – Documentation in Free and Open Source Software. What exactly makes “good” documentation? And why is it important today? Watch to learn more (also available on PeerTube).

• Throughout the month, we posted various articles about the Open Document format and XML: Technology at the heart of our daily lives; The role of XML in interoperability; An artificially complex XML schema as a lock-in tool; and Understanding ODF file types: .odt, .ods, .odp, and beyond.

• On July 17, we announced LibreOffice 25.2.5. This is the fifth minor update to the 25.2 branch, with bugfixes and compatibility improvements. All users are recommended to upgrade.

• And while that branch is being updated regularly, we’re also preparing for the next major release. LibreOffice 25.8 RC2 is available for testing – thanks in advance to everyone who helps to report issues, so we can make it a rock-solid final version!

• In Documentation news, the Getting Started Guide 25.2 was published after some months of work. Well done to everyone involved!

• And finally, the Call for Proposals for the LibreOffice Asia Conference 2025 was opened. The event will take place in Tokyo on 13 and 14 December.
