LibreOffice 3.4.1 provides stable new features for every user

The Internet, July 1, 2011 – The Document Foundation announces the release of LibreOffice 3.4.1, the second version of the newer 3.4 family, targeting both private individuals and enterprises. LibreOffice 3.4.1 fixes several bugs that affected the previous version, and can be safely deployed for production needs by most users.

LibreOffice 3.4.1 can be downloaded from the following page: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/.

Large enterprises deploying LibreOffice on desktop PCs, are still recommended to deploy LibreOffice 3.3.3, which has been tested over several months by thousands of people worldwide, and are encouraged to call on professional support services. LibreOffice 3.4.2, available at the end of July, will target enterprise deployments.

Recognizing that large enterprises and conservative users have special needs, The Document Foundation has decided to provide two different versions of the software, so as to garner to the needs of power users looking for the latest enhancements while still catering to the priorities of more-prudent users who prefer stability over availability of new features.

Versions announced as stable can be safely deployed in work environments, as bugs might hamper individual features but won’t have an impact on the overall quality and security of document production.

      Regarding Ubuntu, I just uninstalled the current packages, downloaded the two deb files and “dpkg” installed from there. Seems to work fine.

    Thanks for the news (read from Twitter 😉 ).
    We are going to deploy version 3.4.1 (after 3.4) on next week (at work). For information, various OSs are used: MacOSX 10.4, Ubuntu 10.04, SuSE 11, Windows XP, Windows Vista.
    Just a question: will there be an automatic update function (like an item menu) within LibreOffice? maybe I missed it from view…

    The chart is interesting, but the x-axis is unlabeled (it is a calendar, but are we measuring months, quarters, weeks?) The colors are unlabeled, but I suppose “Green is good,” “Yellow be careful,” and “Red means stop.” There are 2 parallel branches mentioned, but how this correlates to the colors and the stair step is not obvious.

    More explanations please.

      No, colors have no other meaning than to separate visually the different families (it should be clear from the top three lines). The attributes of each release are on the left side in the lower part of the matrix. In terms of timing, we are talking of the next 10/12 months.

        Color choice is wrong on you graphs because it suggests higher releases are bad.

          I have changed the colors to different shades of gray, and added a space to separate upper and lower portions. I hope this improves the image.

        I’m not sure that the issue is the terminal install.
        Ubuntu has a wonderful PPA system and we generally rely on the PPA to provide cutting-edge software.

        I’m happy to install via the .debs but the truth is Integration is never as smooth.

        On that note, has anyone actually gotten the Unity integration to work in 3.4.x?

        Ubuntu is ” Linux for human beings “. Not for geeks ;). The PPA system goes that way : a simple way to get your software fixed, secured, at all times. And plus, with the DEBS files the Unity integration is not great …

    Hi,

    I had installed version 3.4.0 few days back in 64-bit Ubuntu11.04 OS. However I did not get any notification about the latest 3.4.1 version. I tried manually searching for updates through Update Manager but in vain. Also, I didn’t find any “check for updates” kind of thing in the LIbreoffice 3.4.0. Help me how to find it.

        Thanks Conor. However even in 3.4.1 I didn’t find “check for updates” kind of thing in Tools -> options as in openoffice. Is it located somewhere else. Also, in Ubuntu if any package is installed from .deb package then it automatically searches for updates which didn’t happen in my case when I had installed 3.4.0 version. Is there something wrong??

        Hey, there is no ‘check for updates feature’ in the current Libreoffice packages. Further, only software that you install through a repository is going to have the auto-update that you’re talking about. I’ll give it a quick explanation:

        Ubuntu (and every other Linux distribution if I’m not mistaken) has a system of repositories where packages are housed. When you install a program through the Ubuntu software centre, it gets downloaded from this repository. As packages are updated, they get uploaded onto the repository and then your Ubuntu installation knows to automatically update them.

        When we install programs manually like we are doing for Libreoffice 3.4.x, we are not adding a repository, so there is no online source for Ubuntu to check for updates, thus you need to install all updates manually as well. There is a PPA that you can add, which is like a self-maintained repository for Libreoffice. It contains the 3.3.x stream though, so it won’t have the 3.4.x updates until it become the ‘production’ stream.

        To add the Libreoffice PPA, open a terminal and type (without quotes):
        “sudo apt-add repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa” (hit enter, enter your user password)
        “sudo apt-get update”
        “sudo apt-get install libreoffice”

        That will keep you up to date with the 3.3.3 series.

    Why dont you ALWAYS give a link to the changelog in the announcemet? it is a basic and most important thing! Why should i download if i dont know what is changed? Please, change your template or what you use for announcements, and inculde a link to hcangelog. Thanks a lot! love libreoffice.

    Considerably improvements since 3.4.0; however pivot tables function still have serious regressions and complex calc documents with tens of data pilots or pivot tables cannot be edited by this version.

    Hi, I’d like to suggest a fix to Calc for the next releases.
    The “Tipo” function (in italian) doesn’t work in the same way of “Tipo” function in MS Excel.
    If I write in A1 “15” and in B1 “=tipo(A1)”, Calc and Excel give the same result (1) but it I write in A1 “=30/2” (or other formulas) the results are different. Calc says “8”, Excel “1”.
    Is it possible to fix it?

    Can someone tell me what has happened to NLPsolver? Building it into the program was a good idea but it seems to have gone flaky. On 3.4.1 (deb) (UBUNTU 11.04-32 bit on laptop) it doesn’t work at all and I just see a few flashes and no result while on 3.4.0 Windows 7 I just have to click the Solver button for LIBO-calc to crash instantly, leaving an inaccessible soffice running which has to be brought down using task manager before I can start again.

    On my laptop I have reverted to OpenOffice and the imported extension to recover this facility which is an essential feature of my work and the main reason for migrating from Excel’s ropy equivalent. On the desktop I have had to export to XLS format and use Microsoft again.

    If the built in extension doesn’t work can it be easily removed and the original version imported?

      I am replying to my own post. I spent all this afternoon trying to solve this on my Windows 7 machine. IT IS NOT LO’s fault!! I tried LO3.4.1, LO3.3 and OO3.3 and the nlpsolver was failing on everything!!!. Did a little hunt, backdated IE9 to IE8 and nlpsolver works in all of them.

      I also found I was having other problems with calc in that it was trying to resurrect non-existent files and the crashing on start. Again getting rid of IE9 has fixed it!

      I don’t know if this is any use to anyone, but somehow updating to IE9 breaks LO/OO. Has anyone else experienced this?

    In this LO3.4.1, and in LO3.4.0, when I open a xlsx file with calc all the formulas are lost. They are replaced with values resulting from the original formulas or #NAME errors. If get a xls file the formulas are read well…

    Did some noticed this problem? Are there solutions to fix this?

    3.4.1 on mac has rtf read regression – RTF files are read without proper encoding (at least in polish). 3.4.0 worked correctly.

    Anyone having a problem with the download page not recognizing their machine’s OS and language. Used to work before 3.4.1 was added. I’m running Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1 and using Firefox 5. The system is US English.

      You may be right, Sig, because for a week my web browser alerts me that there are security problems on entering the Home of http://www.libreoffice.org.

      However, the page > https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ < is properly encrypted and has no security problems. Please, try to use this link directly through Firefox 5 or Opera 11.50. Good luck!

    Installed 3.4.1. No language modules available. So no spellcheck. Reinstalled 3.4.0, now that’s gone too.

      UKbluey: It would be very useful to know what OS you use. However, as I know that downloads of different versions of LibreOffice go complete, I have the suspicion that there are problems of viruses or corrupted files on your computer.

        I tried it on two old XP machines, pavilion and an NC10, just to be on safe side, neither of which are connected to the internet, so no viruses. Same result in either case.

    When I updated from 3.3.3 to 3.4.1, I lost my personal details (Name, address, etc) in the Options.
    The installation process of 3.4.1 does not seem to pick up the settings (options) in a previous version like 3.3.3.
    Some were picked up like the Load/Save settings.

    Afrikaans Spelling test work correctly, but does not want to add new words to the Afrikaans dictionary.
    It picks up my former word lists(dictionary with my changes under 3.3.3 and the time when I have used OpenOffice).

      I must add that I am using WIndows XP and did not yet do some more tests to check out 3.4.1. I will report any other problems that I may have.

      I like LibreOffice as it allow the same formula syntax as Excel, viz using commas as field separators (OpenOffice requires semi-colons), copy and just enter to past in another cell, etc.

        Coming from Textmaker, LibreOffice is even better. I like it. Maybe 3.4.2 will sort it; meantime I’ve got 3.4.0 on my main machine.

    I konw its already said, but i think that you will mantain the ppa for ubuntu upgraded. And do the packages for the LTS distro… I’m using Ubuntu 10.04 and the LibreOffice from PPA is still 3.3.2
    Not saying that every stable release will put in PPA for LTS but least Very Stable yes.

    Hello i use Ubuntu 10.4 and Libreoffice 3.4.3 i observed in calc when ever i put a formula, i dont see a result, but only see the formula. Even simple formulas as = 1+1 not showing any result.
