New and changed features – experience and test them now!

This is the second post with a list of features/functions that have been worked on recently.
We tried our best to include all the important ones and to make sure that the referred information is clear enough. But whenever you miss something: don’t hesitate to ask (via the QA mail list) if there is anything you really miss.
Just as the previous post, this all is to give you as interested users the change to take a better look at the work and provide valuable feed back for the developers.
You can simply download the latest nightly build, and install it on your computer. It will be placed beside your current LibreOffice. (Or you may want to do a custom parallel installation.) Look at the features of your desire or that you work with most, and give some feedback. Simple as that.
Now the list:
- Writer was confused by overlapping grammar errors, 2012-05-09, commit message / info, related issue: 49605.
- Printing from Calc: use default printer settings only when explicity mentioned., 2012-05-09, commit message.
- Bullet lists in file saved as .doc or .docx were loaded incorrectly, 2012-05-09, related issue: 34814.
- Color Scales are now imported from xlsx., 2012-05-10, commit message(one of the many related ones).
- Value >12 with AM/PM can’t be clock time, 2012-05-10, commit message, related issue: 46233.
- Import of .xls with HTML, 2012-05-10, commit message, related issue: 49639.
- Work / improvements on fields, mostly Calc, and Draw/Impress. New is the possibility to insert 3 new fields into Calc cells via the context menu with cell in edit mode, 2012-05-11, one of the related commit messages.
- OpenFormula function Datedif added, 2012-05-13, one of the related commit messages, related issue: 44456.
- Fixing drawing problems with ruler, 2012-05-16, commit message / info.
- Hight of tab pages in dialogs: changed code to allow for easier variable height, 2012-05-17, commit message / info.
- Databars are now imported from oox, 2012-05-18, commit message / info.
- Related to the previous: some changes to color scales β maybe interesting to look at too, 2012-05-18, commit message / info.
- Changes with borders and more in Writer UI, 2012-05-18, commit message / info.
- Autofilter: separators, sorting, some strings, 2012-05-18, one of the related commit messages.
- Work around broken cups installations in complex environments, 2012-05-18, commit message / info.
- Make that row heights (incl default row height) from excel files are saved correctly, 2012-05-22, commit message / info.
- Changes in status bar and zoom slider, 2012-05-22, one of the related commit messages.
- Handle columns in docx files, 2012-05-24, one of the related commit messages.
- Improve shape position in xlsx files, 2012-05-25, one of the related commit messages, related issue: 49430.
- Import new conditional format information for xlsx files, 2012-05-25, commit message / info.
- Better export of images scaled in PDF export, 2012-05-28, commit message / info, related issue: 46378.
- Better rendering of multiline input bar, 2012-05-28, commit message / info.

This seems mostly as a rather trivial list of bug fixes, while I certainly appreciate it are there any major features being worked on? Do you plan to import the changes made to OpenOffice? There are reportedly some new feature that are going to come from IBM’s contribution of Symfony: “These include new sidebar panel management and properties panels, visually improved tabs, better structured menus, clip art and templates, enhanced bullet/numbering, graphical connectors for document and spreadsheet editing, Visual Basic APIs, performance enhancements, presentation features, DataPilot panel, and wildcard formula support.”
I must say they seem more significant, do you plan to adopt them and develop some major features on top of it?

Yes, we are working to integrate some of the features coming with the IBM contribution, as soon as it is going to be released under the Apache License (the file headers have still to be updated in the proper way). Interim LibreOffice releases like 3.5.4 are maintenance releases and do not include new features. The speed increase is in fact the result of several bug and regression fixes.

Version number changes like from 3.5.3 to 3.5.4 mostly means a maintenance release, the first number indicates a “major” release which means 3 major releases has been done. The second number is mostly a “minor” number which means in addition to the 3 major releases, 5 additional minor releases are done + 4 maintenance (aka. bugfixing-) releases.
But this doesn’t mean that everyone is doing this. π
Just a thought. I like stability and smooth working of current functionality instead of new bells and whistles. After all, I use this software for writing and communicating. BTW, would be nice to have speech to text recognition….. ( OK – I know – a new feature π )
Speech to text would free stroke patients like myself, from Windows. Hope fully, maybe, someday?

If this post is supposed to summarize just minor bugfixes between the minor releases then it hould be made clear. “New and changed features” sounds like there would be some actual features – things like “Value >12 with AM/PM canβt be clock time” don’t sound like much of a feature π
Bugfixes are important, just make clear that that’s what it is π still, where could I finf any major features that are planned/being worked on please?
@Libreman: I am sure that you know the preliminary release notes for the upcoming LibreOffice version 3.6: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.6 There are quite some nice features included and as far as I know the list is not even complete.
These posts display as broken on the libreoffice.org home page. Someone I was trying to convince to use LibreOffice at their organization asked me, “They can’t display text properly on their home page, and you want be to use their software for my business?”

I’m unable to find a place where I could suggest a feature which I’ve been waiting for a long time to be added to LO and it is not there yet. So I’m writing here.
Please, could you add in Toolbar customizations also the font list, so the frequently used fonts could be added to the toolbar in Writer (or whatever)? Microsoft Office has always had this option which is very useful for those who work with texts and have to change the fonts frequently. It’s much easier to use a button for a specific font from a toolbar, than to scroll on the list of fonts each time and choose the necessary font.
Please add this feature to LibreOffice too.

Styles system is the proper way of doing this; and it has always been there.
That is much more complex to set up and get working reliably for the average user. Having one button for the two or three fonts a common user might want in a document is much more straightforward.
Such an “average use” is very common in MS Office world (yes, I see, the OP is saying exactly that). And it brings a whole lot of problems to others (who try to use that user’s masterpieces). Well, do we need a first line indent? Let’s insert a bunch of spaces. Need to align numbers on several lines? Spaces again! Need to emphasize something? Let’s select it and make it bold. Or italic. Or underline. Or increase font size. (And often interchange it across the document). Need a couple of fonts in document? Do it manually in each case. Need an underline for some future text? The “_” character is great for that! Need a list? At best, use a toolbar button; more often – just enter numbers or markers manually. No tab stops, no tables, no styles, no TOC, nothing.
And when this “average user” is satisfied with this document, another user sees it and is astonished how bad does it look. Indents and aligns are bent; numberings look awful (bent, and not consistent – some with spaces after numbers; some without; some with dots, or with tabs… And sometimes numbering is incontigous!). Emphasis is unique in each single place; headers are different; if you enter a text in placeholders, everything tends to skew… And if you decide that a font in some case needs to be changed with another, you need to do it manually across the entire document. I just can’t list a smallest part of possible stupidities you can encounter in such writings, without making this post twenty pages long.
These great texts are copied zillion times; each brings the horrible formatting with it. And too often I see that another “average user” is facing a problem when he cannot figure out why a second line of text in a table cell “cannot be entered” (it is simply out of visibility – say, paragraph starting at -5cm or at +10 cm). And so on, and so on…
And that same “average user” who suffered a moment ago from these problems caused by incompetence of another fellow, instantly starts to repeat these same (or millions other) awful types of “formatting”. They always have time to overcome these obstacles; and they always have time to say “I have no time to learn styles and other ways of proper formatting”. And they never have time for preparing one or a couple of proper templates that would be used later, without future need for “complex” setup.
I’m quite skilled with Word and I found the Styles system in LibreOffice impossible to figure out without reading the user guide. It’s not a good idea to be condescending to users.
I’m quite skilled in walking, and I found driving a car impossible without learning. It’s not a good idea to blame a complex yet powerful thing for its complexity. (Though in reality, as I came from MS Office world where I used to use styles, I found Libre(Open)Office styles system quite similar, and sometimes superior to that of MS Office.)
Styles system is NOT always useful. And different tasks demand different options. So the existence of two options wouldn’t be bad in a good program.

Although it is 32 bits of Windows 7, if 3.5 series tends to be installed ordinarily and it is going to start it, it will come out saying, “Libreoffice 3.5 stopped operation”, and will force to terminate.
It was useless even if tried how many times.

I would like to see a RGB colour widget like the one that Apache OpenOffice has. This allows you to change the colour of any cell in calc by entering the RGB value.
I brought a spreadsheet with coloured cells across from Apache OpenOffice and it copied perfectly into LibreOffice Calc.
Hi…I once left a suggestion here, which I would to reaffirm: It would be AWESOME if LibreOffice included an also-free statistics program like SPSS. You could call it “Stat” or something like it…
I feel like I’m playing a one-string violin or something, but until you get the MySQL native connector working for LibreOffice, it’s useless to me.
