The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5.3
Record number of new contributors + 10 Google Summer of Code projects
Berlin, May 2, 2012 – The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5.3, the fourth version of the 3.5 family. LibreOffice 3.5.3 provides additional stability to corporate and individual users of the best free office suite ever.
“In April 2012, 34 new developers contributed code to The Document Foundation, the largest number since January 2011 [Source: http://www.ohloh.net]. Eight of them have already committed more than once, thanks to the help of an extremely welcoming community, where old developers spend a portion of their time mentoring new ones to bring them up to speed,” comments Norbert Thiebaud, a volunteer developer active since September 28, 2010. “In less than two years, we have been able to build an authentically diverse community, where full time and volunteer developers coexist and help each other, as it should happen in every free software project.”
Ten of the new developers are Google Summer of Code 2012 students, who will work at developing the following features:
- Calc performance improvements;
- Lightproof improvements;
- collaborative spreadsheet editing using Telepathy;
- a Microsoft Publisher import filter;
- a signed PDF export;
- a smartphone remote control;
- a new UI for picking templates;
- a Java based GUI for an Android viewer;
- an improved Impress SVG export filter;
- tooling for more and better tests.

Dear Linux Users,
here is a tutorial on installing LibreOffice on Debian-based Linux Distribustions (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, …)

Congratulations to the Document Foundation for this new release!
“A Java based GUI for an Android viewer” sounds like a dream come true for me. May I help alpha-testing?!?! 😉
How do I use the Publisher Import filter? It doesn’t seem to be listed as a file type when I go to open the file, and LibreOffice 3.5.3 doesn’t seem to just recognize it when I select “All files” as the file type (it presents me with a window asking for a “filter selection”, and again Microsoft Publisher or anything similar is not in that list).
Too early. The MS Publisher import filter will be developed in the next few months, and might be available with LibreOffice 4.0 in early 2013.
Oh, ok. You’re right. I misread that. I thought it said it was worked on for this release. Thanks! Very much looking forward to that, as I have people I work with here that insist on working in Publisher, and send me these files all the time.
I’m also hoping that sooner or later, there will be a fix for the very long-standing bug where moved Writer table rows are written over their new locations rather than inserted into their new locations. That adds so much extra work to what I do (one of the documents I work with constantly involves moving things around in tables), and insert is the method that every other major word processor uses, not overwrite. I asked for this fix way back in OOo 2, and have posted it to OOo and LibO forums and bug reports. OOo promised it would be released sometime in the 3.x version, but I know that things have changed since then, and LibO is a different project. Hopefully that’s in the plans at some point really soon. I REALLY need that.
It is a painstaking work that has been done so far to improve the quality of LibreOffice.
This update, I am sure,will turn off the complaints of many people and give strength to the enthusiasm of users who, just as I, have it already installed on their machines.
My thanks and congratulations to all those who have collaborated in this project of TDF.
Thank you for great work keeping this project alive!
May be it’s reasonable to spend resources of the Google summer of code for improvement of quality of the product and to find solution for growing number of bugs! I would like to use new opportunity to have increased number of pivot table arguments and other real improvements; but due to broken crosss-reference dialogue in writer and other terrible bugs I will stick to the version 3.3.4. Let’s see what new will provide next version of the OpenOffice.org.
Again, best regards and, please, pay more attention to the quality issues!
Why don’t you use 3.4.6?
3.4. branch as such is useless, because of bugs in calc. It crashes on any more or less complex document with array formulas. In 3.5 this problem has gone. There were also several calculation and formatting errors in pivot table element (just like in 3.3.4). In Libreoffice 3.5 these problems are solved in general, but new bunch of bugs were introduced into writer.
Sometimes it seems that developers don’t use and therefore don’t understand, why certain functions are necessary in LibreOffice, except as a chellange for them as programmers. For instance, it is hard to imagine msoffice with broken cross-reference function or lost ability to play animated gifs in presentations in major release.
LibreOffice 3.5 is functionally the best release with many long awaited improvements, and therefore those few or not so few terrible regressions in basic functions are so painful.
What about:
– automatic updates (in perfect word browser (Firefox) like),
– fixing updates so that they don’t remove pinned docs from Start Menu (Windows 7)?
All I want is a default keyboard shortcut for small capitals (probably control + shift + K), just as Word and WordPerfect have had since the 1990s, or at the very least the ability to set one without messing with character styles. Seriously, that’s it. Could you please get somebody to look at that?
Why don’t you make a macro ?
Please use https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/ to get the core developers attention. I also recommend nagging on the mailing lists https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/
