LibOCon Visa – Don’t forget to apply!

From October 17th to 19th, the LibreOffice Conference takes place in Berlin, Germany, with one additional community meeting day on October 16th.

We would like to remind you of the visa requirements. In a nutshell:

If you want to join the conference,
please check NOW if you need a visa,
and please act NOW to get an invitation letter.

Here’s the details:

People living outside Europe and the “Schengen area” may require a visa to participate. Based on our experience, depending on the country of origin, applying for such a visa can be a lenghty, tedious task. We therefore recommend everyone to act already NOW so required documents can be provided in time. Bureaucratic delays of several months (!) have happened in the past for certain countries, with the reasons out of the organizers’ responsibility, so therefore the sooner you act, the better it is. Unfortunately, although rarely, it already happened that people could not participate because they sent in their visa request too late.

So, again, act NOW.

Community Meetings at LibOCon

As previously announced, the next LibreOffice Conference will take place from

    October 17th to 19th
    in Berlin, Germany

with the Call for Papers currently running (http://conference.libreoffice.org), and the final program to be announced in early September.

All three days of the conference are open for the general public. In addition, on

    October 16th
    i.e. one day before the official Conference

we will, in good tradition, host the so-called Community Meetings. While they are not per se private, they are – in comparison to the rest of the Conference – mainly targetted towards existing project members, and take place in form of meetings and workshops rather than lectures.

Currently planned are meetings for the following groups:

  • Board of Directors
  • Advisory Board
  • Membership Committee
  • Engineering Steering Committee
  • regional groups, like the German, French, Italian or Brazilian community
  • marketing
  • website
  • design and user experience
  • QA and localization
  • system administrator and infrastructure
  • certification

If you are part of any of those groups, committees or bodies, we strongly recommend planning your trip so you can attend on October 16th already. The Community Meetings serve the purpose to meet your fellow colleagues and friends, discuss the successes of the last twelve months, and plan the achievements of the next year.

LibreOffice Conference supported by the German Federal Ministries of the Interior and of Economics and Technology

Three days in Berlin focused on LibreOffice, open standards and interoperability
Call for papers is open until 15th August

Berlin, 21st June 2012. Today the LibreOffice project announces details of the LibreOffice Conference, taking place in Berlin from 17th-19th October. “Open standards, interoperability and free software are becoming more and more important in the political and public discourse, and will play a central role in this year’s conference program,” says Jacqueline Rahemipour, from the organizing association Freies Office Deutschland e.V. and member of the organizing committee.

In addition, the project announced that the Call for Papers is immediately open until 15th August. Users and developers are invited to submit papers fitting one of the topics listed below. The submissions will then be reviewed by a committee, and the final program will be made available in early September. Topics for this year are:

  • Open Document Format (ODF) Plugfest
  • Interoperability
  • LibreOffice – Development and future: Technology, API, Extensions
  • Community-Track: Localization, Documentation, etc.
  • Best Practice und Migration: Certification and Support

“The decision to hold this years conference in Berlin was made by an overwhelming majority of the community. Following the founding of The Document Foundation in February, we are proud to also have the LibreOffice Conference come to Berlin. This is a major event, not only for those involved in the project, but also for the everyone interested in the use of free office software and open standards”, explains Florian Effenberger, Chairman of the Board at The Document Foundation.

LibreOffice Conference 2012 will be held in Berlin, Germany

Today, The Document Foundation proudly announces Berlin, Germany as the host for this year’s LibreOffice Conference.

The Document Foundation members jointly decided on the location for their conference in a public poll that closed last week. Its final results are now fixed.

The Board of Directors congratulates Berlin for having won this year’s LibreOffice conference bid. We sincerely hope to meet many of you later this year, when in autumn 2012, the LibreOffice conference opens up in Berlin!

LibOCon 2012 Proposals

Following our public Call for Locations, two proposals for hosting the LibreOffice Conference 2012, the annual gathering of the community, have been sent in. In alphabetical order, the proposals are:

We now invite the candidates and the community to discuss the proposals on our public discuss mailing list, where further questions can be asked, and where the applicants can give more details. Following this discussion, there will soon be an election that is scheduled to run for one week, where all members of The Document Foundation can vote. The final location of the LibreOffice Conference 2012 will then be announced soon.

Candidates who did not manage to send in their proposals in time, and those who are unsuccessful in this election, are invited to apply again for the next years’ conference, where the call for location will end this August.

LibreOffice Conference 2012 and 2013 Call for Locations

As previously announced, The Document Foundation is currently running a Call for Locations for our annual, global community event, the LibreOffice Conference. After a successful event in Paris in October 2011, the venues for the next two years will be voted upon by the community.

The Call for Locations is about the venues for the next two conferences, to help the team of the 2013 event learn from the organizers of the 2012 event. Applicants are free to send in a proposal for both dates, or decide for one of the years. Applicants, whose proposal for 2012 was unsuccessful, are also eligible to propose again for 2013.

Traditionally, the LibreOffice Conference takes place between September and November, with a preferred date of October.

The deadlines for sending in your proposals are:

  • Sunday, January 22nd 2012, 23:59 UTC for the 2012 event
  • at the end of August 2012 for the 2013 event, details on this will follow soon

After receiving the applications, we will evaluate necessary preconditions, evaluate the validity and give applicants the chance to clarify vague details. In late January 2012, or early February 2012, the LibreOffice community will vote on their preferred location, so the organizers have enough time for their preparations. Please do not vote on random locations but rather wait for the official announcement of the proposals and the voting mechanism.

LibreOffice Conference Announcements

During the LibreOffice Conference, The Document Foundation has announced:

* LibreOffice Online Prototype: you can watch a demo video at the following address:
http://people.gnome.org/~michael/data/2011-10-10-lool-demo.webm. LibreOffice Online is based on GTK+ framework and HTML5′s canvas, and has been developed by SUSE’s Michael Meeks, built on GTK+ broadway from RedHat’s Alex Laarson.

* LibreOffice port project to Android and iOS, based on the voluntary work of Tor Lillqvist, a SUSE finnish developer know for having ported GIMP to Windows. The LibreOffice Android and iOS port has the objective of bringing the office suite to iPads and Android tablets, and eventually smaller devices. The user interface work has yet to start in earnest but the bulk of the code is compiling.

Please note that these are not products available to end users, but advanced development projects which will become products sometimes in late 2012 or early 2013.

* 500.000 desktops, mostly Windows, at several French Government entities switching from OpenOffice to LibreOffice (this increases the Windows installed base of LibreOffice by 5% in a single move)

* 800.000 USB keys with LibreOffice and other free software distributed to students of the Paris Region (Île-de-France)

* Region Île-de-France becoming a member of TDF Advisory Board
